How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT in the UAE

ChatGPT and the other AI assistants name businesses they can corroborate across sources they trust. So the work is not a trick: one consistent name, address and phone number everywhere, pages that answer buyers' questions in full, a place on the lists and threads engines already cite, honest reviews, and structured data that matches your pages. Here are ten fixes in priority order, each with a task for this week.

By High Street editorial teamPublished 24 September 2026Reading time 9 min

This is the guide to the fixes. If you have not yet tested whether ChatGPT names you, start with our ten-minute check for whether ChatGPT recommends your business. The list of cited sources it produces is your target list for fixes 4 and 9 below.

What the engines actually cite

We measure this daily. Between 20 August and 11 September 2026 we ran 22 buying prompts in one software category through six engines, 23 times, and kept every source they cited (where AI answers come from).

51.5%
Of outside citations were roundups and comparisons
4.9%
Of evidence from the vendor's own site
411
Citations from Reddit alone

2,061 third-party citations and 106 own-site citations, six engines, 20 August to 11 September 2026.

Three findings shape the fixes. First, engines mostly quote other people about you: roundups and comparisons supplied more than half of the outside citations and community threads 29.1%, while the vendor's own site supplied 4.9% of the evidence. Second, the engines differ. Of 25 outside sites cited at least once, Perplexity drew on 23 and ChatGPT on 3, so ChatGPT is the hardest engine to reach through third-party work. Third, on the vendor's own site, comparison pages drew 58 citations against 14 for long-form guides. Engines quote pages that settle a decision.

That study is one software category, not a local trade, so the proportions may differ for a clinic in Sharjah or a garage in Al Quoz. Our UAE measurement points the same way, though: a car-servicing directory we measure scored 62 out of 100 on traditional search and 3 out of 100 on AI answer visibility on the same day (UAE AI visibility report). Ranking well is not the same as being corroborated.

Ten fixes, in priority order

Fixes 1 to 3 come first because nothing else works without them: crawlers have to be able to read you, and your basic facts have to agree everywhere. From fix 4 on, the order follows what our citation data shows moves the engines most.

1. Let the AI crawlers read your site

OpenAI uses its OAI-SearchBot crawler to surface websites in ChatGPT's search features. It says sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, and that robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to register. Its help centre also asks site owners to make sure their host or CDN lets OpenAI's published crawler addresses through. GPTBot, the training crawler, is a separate setting: you can block training and still allow search (OpenAI crawlers). For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page only has to be indexed and eligible for a normal search snippet (Google).

This week: open yoursite.com/robots.txt and confirm nothing blocks OAI-SearchBot or Googlebot. Ask whoever runs your hosting or firewall whether bot protection is turning crawlers away.

2. Use one name, address and phone number everywhere

If your website, Business Profile and an old directory listing each show a slightly different name or phone number, you look like three uncertain businesses rather than one confirmed one. Google's guidelines say your profile name should be your real-world name, as used on your storefront, website and stationery (Google Business Profile guidelines). Write the phone number with +971 in the same format everywhere; Google's organisation markup guidance also asks for the country and area code.

For Arabic, pick one Arabic spelling of your name and use it everywhere you appear in Arabic. Don't put both scripts in your Business Profile name: the same Google guidelines list repeating a name in several scripts or languages as not allowed, even when your shop sign does it. Carry the other language on your website and your Arabic-language listings instead.

This week: list every place your business appears (Google, Bing, your website footer, social profiles, and the UAE directories and marketplaces your customers use) and correct every mismatch in name, address, phone and hours.

3. Complete your Google Business Profile, and claim Bing Places

Google says verified profiles with complete, accurate information are more likely to show in local results (local ranking tips), and its guidance for AI features specifically mentions keeping Business Profile information up to date. ChatGPT is not Google, though. OpenAI says ChatGPT search sometimes sends rewritten queries to partner search providers and points to Microsoft's privacy statement among them, which is why we would also claim a listing on Bing Places for Business.

This week: verify your profile if you haven't, fill every empty field (categories, service areas, hours including holiday hours, attributes, real photos) and claim Bing Places. Our Google Business Profile checklist goes field by field.

4. Get onto the roundups the engines already cite

This is the largest lever in our data: roundups and comparisons made up 51.5% of outside citations. For a UAE business those are the "best movers in Dubai" articles, local blog and media lists, and the directory category pages that keep appearing in your source column. The check gives you the list; don't guess.

This week: take the five sources cited most often across your grid and check whether you are on each. Where you are missing or wrong, send the editor facts they can verify: what you do, where, what it costs. Ask to be considered, not listed.

5. Ask every customer for a review, honestly

Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. Its rules are strict: no payment, discounts or free services in exchange for a review or for removing a bad one, no reviews from staff or anyone with a conflict of interest, and nothing posted from multiple accounts (Maps content policy). Ask everyone, not only the customers you expect to be happy.

This week: create your Google review link or QR code, which Google supports for exactly this (review tips), and add it to the WhatsApp message or invoice you already send after each job. Reply to reviews, including the bad ones.

6. Publish real prices

Buyers ask "how much" constantly, and an assistant can only give your number if it is published. "Call for price" gives the engine nothing to quote, so it quotes someone else. State a price or an honest range in AED, what it includes, and whether VAT is included.

This week: publish prices or ranges for your three most-asked services, with what is included in each.

7. Rewrite your FAQ as complete answers

Assistants lift passages. "Yes, contact us!" gives them nothing. "We service split and ducted AC units across Dubai and Sharjah, same day for calls before 2pm, from AED [your price] a unit" can be quoted as it stands. Each answer should carry the service, the area, the timing and the price.

This week: take the eight questions you answer most on WhatsApp and the phone, write each as a two-to-four-sentence answer on your site, and add Arabic versions if your customers ask in Arabic.

8. Build pages that settle a decision

On the vendor's site in our study, comparison pages outdrew guides 58 to 14. For a local business that means comparing options, not attacking rivals: ceramic coating or PPF in UAE summers, full-service movers or truck-and-driver for a Dubai to Abu Dhabi move, a deep clean or a regular clean before handing back a rental.

This week: write one comparison page for the decision customers most often ask you to help with.

9. Take part in the threads, as yourself

Community threads carried 29.1% of outside citations in our study. Find the threads on Reddit, Facebook groups or LinkedIn where people in your area ask for recommendations in your category, and answer the useful ones. Say who you are, every time.

This week: find two recent threads asking for a recommendation in your category, answer helpfully, and disclose that you run the business.

10. Add LocalBusiness or Organization schema with sameAs

Structured data will not make an assistant recommend you, and Google says no special schema is needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. It does state your facts in a form machines read reliably. Google says organisation markup helps it tell your business apart from others, and its sameAs property is for your profile pages on other sites, such as social or review profiles (Organization markup). Keep it matching the visible page: Google's rules say not to mark up content readers cannot see (structured data guidelines).

This week: add a LocalBusiness block to your home or contact page with name, address, +971 phone, URL, hours and sameAs links to your Google, Bing, social and directory profiles, then check it in Google's Rich Results Test.

What does not work

  • Keyword-stuffing your business name. "Best AC Repair Dubai" added to your Business Profile name breaks Google's naming rules and can get the profile suspended. Blocks of text listing every emirate and neighbourhood you want to rank for are one of the keyword-stuffing examples in Google's spam policies.
  • Fake or bought reviews. Paid, incentivised or conflict-of-interest reviews are fake engagement under Google's Maps policy, and Google removes them.
  • Mass AI-generated pages. Two hundred "AC repair in [area]" pages with only the area swapped fit Google's definition of scaled content abuse, however they were produced, and give an assistant nothing new to quote.
  • Buying a listicle spot without disclosure. Google treats paid links that pass ranking credit as link spam unless they are marked sponsored or nofollow. And a paid slot readers can't recognise as paid undermines the trust that makes a list worth citing. If you sponsor a list, make sure it is labelled.

How to tell it is working

Re-run the same unbranded questions monthly using the grid from our ChatGPT recommendation check, and expect movement engine by engine rather than all at once.

If you need daily numbers, we recommend Cituna, which tracks your buyer prompts daily across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode and connects to Google Search Console.

Starter is $39 a month for one brand and 10 buyer prompts, which is tight if your customers ask many distinct questions, and the free trial lasts three days and needs a card. If you would rather have the ten fixes done for you, that is our AI search visibility service.

Questions people ask

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

Not into the answer itself. OpenAI does run ads on ChatGPT, checked by a separate crawler, but that is advertising, not a recommendation. For search results, OpenAI's help centre says ChatGPT ranks them on multiple factors and placement is not guaranteed, and Google says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. What you can do is make your business easy to corroborate, which is what the ten fixes are for.

Is SEO still worth doing if customers ask AI instead?

Yes. Google says the same SEO best practices apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no extra requirements. Ranking alone is not enough, though, as the 62-versus-3 directory above shows.

How long before ChatGPT starts naming my business?

There is no fixed timeline and nobody can promise one. In our citation data ChatGPT drew on 3 of 25 outside sites in three weeks while Perplexity drew on 23, so third-party work tends to show up in Perplexity and Claude before ChatGPT.
