Quick answer
- Why it matters: AI Overviews and AI Mode clicks and impressions land in Search Console, counted inside the Web search type.
- What Google now shows: a separate generative AI report (rolled out to all sites by 31 August 2026) with AI impressions only: no clicks, CTR, position or queries.
- What it cannot show: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Grok, and whether an AI answer named you. That is the AI visibility tool's job.
- How to choose: check the integration is on your plan, what data it pulls, how it matches queries to prompts, and test it on your own property.

Why does Search Console matter for AI visibility?
Because it is the Google side of the same questions. When someone asks Google a question and gets an AI Overview or uses AI Mode, the impressions and clicks on your pages are counted in Search Console. Google says pages shown in AI features count toward overall Search traffic, in the Performance report under the Web search type (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, last updated 10 December 2025).
Google's help page on the Performance report explains how. An AI Overview takes up one position in the results, and every link inside it gets that same position. A click on an external link inside it counts as a click. AI Mode links are counted like a normal results page (Search Console Help, Performance report methodology).
The clicks are worth watching. Pew Research Center tracked real browsing by US adults and found that when a Google search showed an AI summary, users clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits, against 15% without one (Pew Research Center, 22 July 2025). Seer Interactive's 2026 update found brands cited in the AI Overview averaged 2.07% organic CTR, against 0.94% for brands not cited (Seer Interactive, 24 April 2026). Being in the answer shows up in your Search Console numbers.
What does Search Console show about AI answers in 2026?
Two things, and a tool can use them differently.
The generative AI report. Google announced a separate Search generative AI performance report on 3 June 2026, and it reached all sites worldwide by 31 August 2026 (Google Search Central Blog). It shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country, device and date. It has no clicks, CTR, position or query dimension, it does not split AI Overviews from AI Mode, and two results from the same site count as one impression in the chart total. The table keeps the usual 1,000-row limit (Search Console Help, generative AI performance report).
The standard Performance report and its API. The same AI traffic still counts here, inside Web, but there is no AI-only filter. Through the Search Analytics API, a tool can pull clicks, impressions, CTR and average position by query, page, country, device, date, search appearance and hour. The API returns at most 25,000 rows per request and only guarantees the top rows. The search types the API reference lists, as last updated 11 August 2026, are web, image, video, news, googleNews and discover (Search Console API reference).
So a tool that says it shows "AI Overview clicks from Search Console" needs to explain how: the AI report has no clicks, and the standard data has no AI filter. For the click-loss side of this, see our guide to tracking Google AI Overviews.
What can't Search Console tell you?
- Anything outside Google. Search Console covers Google Search only. It has no ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude or Grok data. OpenAI says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so those visits show up in your analytics instead (OpenAI Publishers and Developers FAQ).
- AI Overview clicks in GA4. Google added an AI Assistant channel to GA4 on 13 May 2026, naming ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude (What's new in Google Analytics). Its channel definitions add sources like Deepseek, Copilot and Grok, but exclude AI Overviews and AI Mode, which stay in Organic Search (GA4 default channel group).
- Whether you were named. An impression in an AI Overview means your page was among the links. It does not tell you whether the answer recommended you or a competitor, or what it said.
That last gap is why you need an AI visibility tool at all. Search Console tells you what Google sent you. The tool tells you what the answer said.
What can a Search Console join show that neither does alone?
When a tool joins your Search Console data to the AI answers it tracks, you can see:
- Rank-but-not-named gaps: queries where you rank on Google, but the AI engines name other brands for the same question. These are often the quickest wins, because Google already trusts the page.
- Real questions to track: your Search Console queries are the questions people actually type. Superlines, for example, mentions Search Console as a prompt source (29 September 2026).
- Pages AI features show against pages AI engines cite: the generative AI report lists pages with AI impressions; the tool lists pages engines cite. Where they differ is worth a look.
- CTR changes on AI questions: a query whose impressions hold while clicks fall may be losing clicks to an AI answer.
How do you evaluate a tool's Search Console integration?
1. Confirm Search Console is on the plan you would buy
"Integrates with Search Console" on a feature page does not mean it is on your plan. AthenaHQ lists Search Console and GA4 on Starter ($295 a month), but its free plan card does not list it. Semrush reaches Search Console through a Base Report add-on at $10 a month. Ahrefs has Search Console data in a separate tool, GSC Insights, which is not part of Brand Radar's pricing (all 28 September 2026).
2. Check it connects every property you report on
Make sure you can connect the Search Console properties you actually use. If you run several sites, or an agency with clients, check how many properties each plan allows and whether each one counts as a separate brand or project.
3. Ask exactly which Search Console data it pulls
Ask three questions. Does it read query-level Performance data (clicks, impressions, CTR, position)? Does it read the generative AI report? And how does it label AI traffic, given that Google counts it inside Web? A vague answer here usually means a simple traffic chart, not a join.
4. See how it matches search queries to AI prompts
The value is in the match. A good integration lines up a Google query such as "best accountant in Dubai" with the AI prompt tracking the same question, so you can see both results side by side. Ask for a sample report that shows one question with its Search Console numbers and each engine's answer.
5. Check the limits on rows and history
The Search Console API returns at most 25,000 rows per request and only guarantees the top rows. A site with a long tail of queries will not get every query into any tool. Ask how many rows the tool imports, how far back, and how often it refreshes.
6. Look at what it does with the join
Some tools show the gap and stop. Others help close it. Cituna writes the fix for each gap it finds and can publish the article. Writesonic bundles AI article writing with tracking. Decide whether you want a report for your own team or help doing the work.
7. Test it on your own property during a trial
Connect your real property and compare the tool's numbers with Search Console itself for the same dates. SE Ranking offers 14 days with no card, ZipTie 7 days with no card, and Cituna 3 days with a card (28 September 2026 for SE Ranking and ZipTie). If the numbers do not match, ask why before you pay.
Which AI visibility tools include Search Console integration?
From each vendor's own pages, on the dates shown. "Engines" means the engines on the plan listed. For how these tools compare on everything else, see the seven criteria for choosing an AI visibility tool.

Not listed on the pages we read: Otterly.AI (it offers a Looker Studio connector from Standard instead), Profound (its integrations list Google Analytics, not Search Console), Peec AI and Scrunch. xSeek mentions a Search Console integration but does not say which plan has it (29 September 2026).
Can you ask an AI engine which tool has Search Console?
You can, but check the answer. Our Cituna scan of 22 buyer questions across seven engines on 28 September 2026 included "which AI visibility tool includes Google Search Console". Six engines answered (Google AI Overviews did not return one), and five of the six named Promptwatch. Promptwatch's pricing page, read on 29 September 2026, did not publish a Search Console integration. It may exist, but the vendor's page is the source to trust, not the answer.
Cituna
Cituna checks your buyer questions every day on seven engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. Google Search Console and MCP are included on its plans, which are $39, $119 or $399 a month, with a 3-day trial that needs a card. When it finds a gap, it writes the fix and can publish the article. It does not track Microsoft Copilot. Cituna's pricing page
Where the others fit
SE Ranking suits teams that want AI tracking inside a full SEO suite, with Search Console, API credits and MCP on Core, though it has no Claude, Grok or Copilot. ZipTie suits buyers paying per prompt and per engine, with Search Console by OAuth and a $10 API and MCP add-on. AthenaHQ suits teams that need a long engine list, including Copilot, with Search Console and GA4 on the $295 Starter plan.
Questions people ask
Does Google Search Console show AI Overview traffic?
Yes, in two places. The standard Performance report counts AI Overviews and AI Mode inside the Web search type, with no AI-only filter. The generative AI report, rolled out to all sites by 31 August 2026, shows AI impressions only, by page, country, device and date.
Can Search Console show which queries triggered an AI Overview?
No. The generative AI report has no query dimension, and the standard report does not separate AI features from other Web results. An AI visibility tool that tracks your questions fills that gap.
Does Search Console show ChatGPT traffic?
No. Search Console covers Google Search only. ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, and GA4's AI Assistant channel groups visits from assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
Does GA4 separate clicks from AI Overviews?
No. GA4's Organic Search channel includes AI Overviews and AI Mode, and its AI Assistant channel excludes them, so AI Overview clicks cannot be split from other organic clicks in GA4.
Which AI visibility tools include Search Console integration?
From vendor pages read on 28 and 29 September 2026: Cituna, SE Ranking Core, ZipTie, AthenaHQ Starter, Writesonic, Wellows, Keyword.com and Goodie AI. Semrush offers it through a $10 a month report add-on, and Ahrefs through a separate tool.
