AI visibility for small businesses: what it costs, and what you can safely ignore

By Kevin A Published 8 August 2026 For Owner-operated businesses Includes A free self-check

Published entry prices in this category run from $29 to $899 a month. Most of that range is built for marketing teams with a dedicated analyst. If you run a garage, a clinic or a six-person agency, almost none of it is aimed at you — and the gap between what these tools sell and what you need is where small businesses lose money.

This guide covers three things: what the category actually costs, what a small business genuinely needs from it, and how to check your own position for nothing before you buy anything at all.

Start here: the free check

Before any tool, spend ten minutes establishing whether you have a problem. Most owners assume they are fine because they rank on Google. That assumption is what the measurement in our UAE report broke — a directory scoring 62 out of 100 on traditional search scored 3 out of 100 in AI answers on the same day.

  1. Write down five real customer questions. The questions someone types before they know your name. "Best car AC repair in Sharjah." "Trusted garage for pre-purchase inspection in Dubai." Plain language, include your city, and no business names in the question.
  2. Ask each one in at least three assistants. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity at minimum. Coverage differs sharply between engines — the same question returns different businesses on different assistants, so one assistant is not a sample.
  3. Record who gets named. Note which businesses appear and in what order. This list is your actual competition for that question, and it is frequently not who you assumed.
  4. Run the branded control. Now ask each assistant about your business by name. If it describes you fluently but never named you in step 3, you are recognised but not recommended. That is the most common position, and it is a different problem from being unknown.
Why the branded control matters. A business that shows up when you ask about it by name feels visible. It is not. The customer who matters does not know your name yet — that is the entire reason they are asking an assistant. Only the unbranded questions in step 1 tell you anything commercially useful. We wrote about this trap in more detail in the measurement report.

The useful read here is not which is cheapest. It is that the top of this range is priced around prompt volume — and prompt volume is the one thing small businesses have least of.

The thing nobody tells small businesses: you need fewer prompts than you think

A tool offering 150 tracked prompts sounds like better value than one offering 10. It only is if your market contains 150 genuinely distinct buying questions.

Most do not. A single-location garage might have six real questions customers ask. A dental clinic perhaps twelve. A property brokerage maybe twenty. In our own tracking, the two UAE properties in the measurement report run 18 prompts each, and that covers their commercial surface adequately.

Count your real buying questions before you look at a single price. That number, not the price, tells you which tier you need.

If the honest answer is eight, an entry tier is not a compromise — it is correctly sized, and the money saved is better spent fixing what the scan finds than on tracking questions nobody asks.

What matters at small scale, in order

1. Engine coverage, because gaps are invisible

If a tool does not check an engine, that engine reports as nothing rather than as a gap — and you cannot act on a blind spot you cannot see. This is where entry tiers differ most: as of August 2026, Otterly's entry tier covers four engines with Claude sold as an add-on, while Cituna covers all six at $39. If your customers are technical, Claude and Grok coverage matters more than the price difference.

2. Search Console, because it converts a worry into a number

Without it, a tool tells you that you are not cited. With it, you can see that you rank fourth for that same question, that it drove 1,900 impressions last month, and that the AI answer above it names three competitors. One is anxiety; the other is a decision. Of the nine platforms we compared on 11 September 2026, two state Search Console on their pricing pages: AthenaHQ, including on its free tier, and Cituna, from the $39 tier. (Corrected 11 September 2026: an earlier version of this page said Cituna was the only one, which was true of the five platforms compared in August.)

3. Told what to do, not just what is wrong

This is the difference between a tool a small team keeps and one they cancel. A visibility score with no next action produces a familiar cycle: log in, feel bad, close the tab, cancel in month three. What a small business needs is a short ordered list — add this schema, fix this listing, answer this question properly on this page.

"I tried three tools before Cituna. The others felt like they were built for SEO agencies that already know what to do. Cituna told me exactly what to fix, in order, and I could do it myself without hiring anyone."

4. Setup you can finish in one sitting

Nobody running a business is coming back to a half-configured dashboard. If a tool needs manual prompt authoring, API keys, or a plan decision before it will show you anything, it will not get used.

"We connected our Google Search Console in two clicks. Within five minutes we could see which of our best keywords were losing traffic to AI answers. No other tool showed us that connection."
— Marketing lead, SaaS startup, London (8 employees). Anonymised at the participant's request.

What you can safely skip

The fix is mostly not software

Worth saying plainly, because it is the part tools have no incentive to tell you: the actions that move these numbers are largely unglamorous and mostly free.

None of that requires a subscription. A tool tells you which of these to do first and whether it worked — genuinely valuable, but it is measurement, not the work itself.

Disclosure. High Street Agency uses Cituna and has a commercial interest in it. Pricing figures come from each vendor's public pricing page on 8 August 2026 and are dated because this category changes them often. Customer quotes are anonymised at the participants' request. Verify current pricing before buying.

We will run the check for you

Send us your business and the questions your customers ask. We will run them across all six engines and send back the raw grid — which competitors get named instead of you, on which assistant. No charge, no obligation.
