How to Get Cited by ChatGPT: 7 Steps [2026 Guide]

To get cited by ChatGPT, let OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, make sure your pages are indexed where ChatGPT search looks, and publish pages that give the answer and the facts in plain server HTML. Then get onto the third-party pages ChatGPT already cites for your buyers' questions, and measure the result with utm_source=chatgpt.com and a daily tracker. Each step below links the OpenAI, Google or research source behind it, read on 29 September 2026 unless we say otherwise.

Quick answer

  • Being cited means your URL appears as a source link under a ChatGPT answer. Being named in the text is a different goal.
  • OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot, the training crawler, is a separate switch.
  • ChatGPT cites a short list: in our 28 September 2026 scan its answers cited 4.0 source sites on average, against 19.3 for Perplexity.
  • Put prices, specs and answers in the HTML your server sends, the same for every crawler.
  • Count clicks with utm_source=chatgpt.com in analytics. Search Console has no ChatGPT data.

What does it mean to be cited by ChatGPT?

When ChatGPT searches the web for an answer, it shows the pages it used as source links. A citation is your URL in that list. It is the part of the answer that can send a visitor to you, and the part you can count.

Being recommended is different: ChatGPT names your business in the answer text, with or without a link. The two overlap, but a page can be cited without the brand being recommended, and a brand can be named with no link to its site. If your goal is to be named, especially as a UAE local business, read how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT. This guide is about the link.

The first thing to know is how short ChatGPT's source list is. In our Cituna scan of 22 buyer questions across seven engines on 28 September 2026, ChatGPT's answers cited 4.0 source sites on average. Perplexity cited 19.3, Claude 9.1 and Google AI Overviews 8.0. Two of ChatGPT's 22 answers cited no source at all.

Our earlier three-week study pointed the same way. Between 20 August and 11 September 2026, ChatGPT drew on 3 of the 25 outside sites we tracked, the fewest of six engines (where AI answers come from). With so few slots, each step below is about being one of the handful of pages ChatGPT picks.

How do you get cited by ChatGPT? The 7 steps

Steps 1 and 2 decide whether ChatGPT can find you. Steps 3 to 6 decide whether it picks you. Step 7 tells you if it worked.

1. Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and at your firewall

OpenAI says it uses OAI-SearchBot to surface websites in ChatGPT search results, and that sites which opt it out in robots.txt will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI crawlers overview). Changes to robots.txt for OAI-SearchBot can take about 24 hours to take effect.

Two other OpenAI agents cause confusion. GPTBot crawls content that may be used to train OpenAI's models, and OpenAI says disallowing it is separate from appearing in ChatGPT search. So you can block training and still be citable. ChatGPT-User makes visits that users trigger and is not used to decide what appears in search.

A robots.txt that allows search but blocks training looks like this:

User-agent: OAI-SearchBot
Allow: /

User-agent: GPTBot
Disallow: /

robots.txt is not the only gate. OpenAI's help centre asks site owners to check that their host or CDN lets its published crawler addresses through (Searching the web with ChatGPT, read 24 September 2026). Bot protection that challenges unknown visitors can block OAI-SearchBot even when robots.txt allows it.

This week: open yoursite.com/robots.txt, confirm nothing blocks OAI-SearchBot (a blanket "User-agent: *" disallow counts), and ask whoever runs your firewall whether OpenAI's crawlers are allowed.

2. Get indexed where ChatGPT search looks

OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search (Publishers and Developers FAQ). Its launch post says ChatGPT search uses third-party search providers as well as content partners supply directly, such as AP, Reuters and the FT (Introducing ChatGPT search, 31 October 2024).

OpenAI's help article adds that ChatGPT may send more specific follow-up queries to other search providers after reading the first results, and may share an approximate location with them. That means a question asked in Dubai can pull different sources from the same question asked in London.

OpenAI's post does not name its search providers. Press coverage often names Bing, but we have not seen OpenAI confirm it, so do not bet on one engine. Make sure your key pages are indexed in the major web search engines and submitted through each one's webmaster tools.

Check for an accidental noindex too. OpenAI says a noindex meta tag keeps links out of ChatGPT search, and the crawler must be allowed in to read that tag.

3. Write answer-first pages that settle a decision

Put the answer in the first two sentences of the page, then the evidence. A page that opens with "the cheapest option for one site is X at $Y a month, checked on this date" can be quoted as it stands.

Pick formats that settle a decision. In our three-week study, the measured vendor's comparison pages were cited 58 times and its pricing page 11 times, against 14 citations for its much larger library of guide articles (where AI answers come from). Engines quote pages that resolve a choice.

No OpenAI document we read says a page format guarantees a citation. This is what our data shows the engines quote, not a rule OpenAI publishes. In practice: one page per buyer question, question-shaped headings, a table wherever numbers are compared, and a date on every figure.

4. Get onto the third-party pages ChatGPT already cites

Across six engines in our three-week study, roundups and comparison articles supplied 51.5% of outside citations and community threads 29.1%. ChatGPT was the exception: it drew on only 3 of the 25 outside sites, so broad third-party work reaches it less than it reaches Perplexity or Claude.

The 28 September 2026 scan showed the same narrowness from another angle. ChatGPT cited 60 different sites across its 22 answers, and the sites it cited most often included the software vendors' own domains, such as semrush.com, peec.ai, otterly.ai and ahrefs.com. For ChatGPT, your own page and a few specific third-party pages carry the weight.

So find the exact pages. Run the questions your buyers ask, record every URL ChatGPT cites, and check whether you appear on each. Our ten-minute ChatGPT check sets out the grid. Where you are missing, send the editor facts they can verify and ask to be considered. Never pay for an undisclosed placement.

5. Put the facts in the server HTML

A crawler can quote only what is in the HTML it receives. If your prices appear only after scripts run, a crawler that does not run them gets a page without prices.

We tested this on 28 September 2026 by fetching eight AI visibility vendors' pricing pages as OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. Otterly.AI and Ahrefs Brand Radar returned their full prices to every crawler. Peec AI's page returned no plan prices in its server HTML to any of them; the only currency figure was a funding line. Profound's showed no plan price either, only a funding banner.

Scrunch showed the opposite problem. GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot received a short text page whose plan names, prompt counts and prices differed from the full page sent to Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot. Keep one version of your facts for every visitor.

This week: fetch your pricing and key answer pages with the user agent set to OAI-SearchBot (for example with curl's -A option), view the raw HTML, and search it for your price and your main answer. If they are missing, render them on the server.

6. Add structured data that matches the visible page

Be clear about what markup does. None of the OpenAI pages we read say structured data affects whether ChatGPT cites a page. Google says no special schema is needed for its AI Overviews or AI Mode (AI features and your website).

Markup still states your facts in a form machines read reliably: Organization, Product and Offer with the price, FAQPage, and dates that match the page. Keep every value identical to what readers see; Google's structured data guidelines say not to mark up content that is hidden from readers. Treat it as hygiene, not a lever.

7. Measure citations and clicks

Clicks are the easy half. OpenAI says ChatGPT automatically adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral URLs, so you can count those visits in analytics. Since 13 May 2026, GA4 also has an AI Assistant channel in its default channel group, which sets the medium to "ai-assistant" for recognised assistants; Google's channel definitions list ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok as examples (GA4 default channel group). Search Console has no ChatGPT data, since it covers Google Search only.

Citations are the harder half, because most people who see one never click it, so you have to check the answers themselves. SparkToro and Gumshoe had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts 2,961 times through ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI, and the same list of brands came back twice less than 1 time in 100 (SparkToro, 28 January 2026). SparkToro suggests about 60 to 100 runs of a prompt for a meaningful reading.

Track a rate, not a screenshot. LLM Pulse defines citation rate as responses citing your domain divided by total evaluations, times 100 (LLM Pulse). A hypothetical example: 20 buyer questions checked daily for 30 days is 600 answers; if 48 of them cite your domain, your ChatGPT citation rate is 8%. Watch it month to month.

Which tools track ChatGPT citations?

For daily tracking, these four state that they cover ChatGPT. Rival figures come from each vendor's own pages as recorded on our site on 25 September 2026; check the linked page before you buy. For the full field, see our ChatGPT rank trackers compared.

Cituna. Cituna checks your buyer questions every day on seven engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. When it finds a gap, it writes the fix and can publish the article, which covers steps 3 and 5 as well as step 7. Google Search Console and MCP are included. Plans are $39, $119 or $399 a month, with a 3-day trial that needs a card. Its limits: it does not track Microsoft Copilot, the trial is short, and the plans are fixed tiers. Cituna's pricing page

SE Ranking. Its ChatGPT tracker shows the domains and URLs ChatGPT cites, grouped by source type, whether the answer links to your site, and results by country and language. Core is $129 a month with a 14-day trial and no card (checked 25 September 2026). Its page does not say how answers are collected. SE Ranking pricing

Rankability. It says it sends each keyword to ChatGPT with live web search on and reads back every brand mention, citation and URL, adding your target city to the query. The tracker page gives $99 a month; we found no published prompt or project limits (checked 25 September 2026). Rankability's ChatGPT tracker

Rankscale. It stores answer snapshots and cited domains, and checks through the chat interface at 0.25 credits or the API at 1 credit. Essentials is $20 a month and Pro $99 for 1,200 credits, with a seven-day trial (checked 25 September 2026). Rankscale pricing

Questions people ask

What is the difference between being cited and being recommended by ChatGPT?

A citation is your page's URL shown as a source link for an answer. A recommendation is ChatGPT naming your business in the answer text, with or without a link. You can get one without the other, so track them separately.

Does blocking GPTBot stop ChatGPT from citing my site?

No. OpenAI says GPTBot crawls content that may train its models and that this setting is separate from appearing in ChatGPT search, which uses OAI-SearchBot. Block OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT search will not show your site.

How long does a robots.txt change take to reach ChatGPT?

OpenAI says changes for OAI-SearchBot can take about 24 hours to take effect. Being cited after that depends on whether your page is found and chosen for the question, and nobody can promise a timeline for that.

Can I see ChatGPT traffic in Google Search Console?

No. Search Console covers Google Search only. Use your analytics instead: ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, and GA4 groups ChatGPT visits in its AI Assistant channel.

Why does ChatGPT cite me one day and not the next?

AI answers vary from run to run. SparkToro and Gumshoe found the same list of brands came back twice less than 1 time in 100. Measure how often you are cited across many runs rather than trusting one check.
