Key takeaways
- Only Geoptie and SEOcrawl cover ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude with just a domain and no account.
- Five of the eight skip Claude: Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Semrush, HubSpot and Trakkr. Mangools adds Claude and Gemini only with a free account.
- Ahrefs covers the most engines (six, including Copilot); Trakkr covers ChatGPT only.
- Stated daily allowances: SE Ranking 5 checks, Semrush 3. HubSpot scores model knowledge, not citations.
- A free check is one snapshot on questions the tool picks; tracking change over time needs a paid tracker.
Want a second opinion on what a free checker told you? Get a free visibility check: we run your real buyer questions through seven AI engines, Google and Maps, and tell you which gaps matter.
Which free AI visibility checker should you use?

How this list works
On 28 September 2026 the High Street team ran each of the eight checkers with our own domain, or our brand name where a checker asks for a name instead. We report what each one asks for, which engines it covers, its stated limits, what it returns and what it tries to sell you next, all from the vendor's own page read that day.
We do not publish the scores or results from those runs. One run for one brand says little about how a checker treats yours, and each tool builds its score differently, so the numbers can't be compared across tools.
A tool made the list only if its free check runs without an account. We read 29 free or trial tools and kept eight. They are ordered by three questions, in this order:
- How many of ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude does it cover without an account? These are the three engines in the title.
- Does its output say it covers citations or cited sources? A mention tells you the engine named you; a citation tells you which page it read.
- How many engines in total does it cover without an account? This breaks the remaining ties.
Cituna, which High Street uses in its own client work, has no free checker, so it is not a numbered entry. It appears only in the section on when a free check is not enough, and it is held to the same rule as every tool here: only facts we can source.
What does each free checker ask for and return?
1. Geoptie AI Rank Tracker (best for ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude from a domain)
Geoptie's tracker runs a live query across AI engines and reads each answer for your brand, competing brands and your position in the answer. You give it a domain; it detects the brand name and query. No signup or email.
Engines: ChatGPT (GPT-4o, GPT-5 and ChatGPT Search), Perplexity, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews. Limits: none stated; the page offers "on-demand checks anytime". Returns: a visibility score, whether you were mentioned and how, competing brands, your ranking position and recommendations.
Upsell: the Geoptie platform, for recurring tracking and history. The checker page shows no price; Geoptie's pricing page listed Starter at $49 a month, or $490 a year billed annually, for 15 prompts, 2 brands and any 4 of 7 engines per brand (checked 28 September 2026).
Strength: it covers all three title engines from a domain alone, and its page says it runs a live query and reads each answer for your position and the brands named beside you.
Limit: the query is detected from your domain, and the page does not say whether you can change it. A check on a question your buyers never ask tells you little.
Pick it if: you want one free snapshot across ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude and have only a domain to hand.

2. SEOcrawl AI Visibility Checker (best for how models frame you)
SEOcrawl's checker looks at how the major models frame a brand, which competitors they recommend and the content patterns behind their citations. It asks for a domain and nothing else.
Engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity. Limits: none stated; the page says there is "no usage gate". Returns: an AI visibility score, a read on brand framing, a competitor list, citation patterns, a prioritised list of fixes and a shareable link.
Upsell: SEOcrawl AI Prompt Tracking, with no price on the page (checked 28 September 2026).
Strength: a shareable link to send to a colleague or client, plus the competitors the models suggest instead.
Limit: the page does not say whether it queries the live engines or relies on what the models already know, so you can't tell whether it matches what a buyer sees today.
Pick it if: you care most about how the models describe you and whom they recommend instead.

3. Ahrefs AI Visibility Checker (best for mention counts and cited sites)
Ahrefs' checker counts how often AI platforms mention a brand in answers to real, search-derived questions, drawn from its Brand Radar dataset. You type a name: your brand, a product, a person or a competitor. There is no signup and no email.
Engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. It does not cover Claude. Limits: no daily cap is stated, but the free view is "a limited preview" with the top 5 rows per section and no saved history. Returns: total AI mentions, mentions by platform, the top 5 topics, top 5 cited domains and top 5 cited pages. There is no score and no competitor comparison.
Upsell: Ahrefs Brand Radar at $199 a month for selected platforms or $699 for all platforms; Ahrefs' EU page shows €179 and €654 (checked 28 September 2026). A sister tool, the free AI Overviews Tracker, covers AI Overviews only.
In our Cituna scan of 22 buyer questions across seven engines on 28 September 2026, all seven engines named an Ahrefs AI visibility tool when asked for a free AI visibility checker.
Strength: the widest engine list of the eight without an account, and the only one with Copilot. You can also type a competitor's name.
Limit: no Claude, and the preview stops at five rows per section.
Pick it if: you want to see which domains and pages the engines cite for your brand, and Copilot matters to your buyers. If you later outgrow it, our list of Ahrefs Brand Radar alternatives compares the paid options.

4. SE Ranking AI visibility checker (best for you against five competitors)
SE Ranking's free checker counts brand mentions and linked mentions of your domain and up to five competitor domains in AI answers. A linked mention is one where the answer links to the site.
Engines: Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. It does not cover Claude. Limits: five checks a day; the page counts down "5 free attempts left for today". Returns: a table of brand mentions and linked mentions, each as a number and a percentage, per domain, which you can copy or download as a CSV.
Upsell: a 14-day free trial of SE Ranking and its SE Visible tool. SE Ranking's pricing page listed Core at $129 a month ($103.20 billed annually), with a 14-day trial that needs no card and allows 20 AI prompts a day (checked 28 September 2026).
Strength: it separates mentions from linked mentions and exports a CSV, which none of the other seven checker pages mention.
Limit: no Claude, and only five checks a day.
Pick it if: you want a side-by-side with named competitors that you can paste into a report.

5. Semrush AI Visibility Tool (best for Google's AI surfaces)
Semrush's free tool shows how often and how prominently a domain's brand appears in AI answers, using Semrush's own prompt database. It asks for a domain and runs "three times per day for free, without registering".
Engines: ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews. It does not cover Claude or Perplexity. Returns: an AI Visibility Score from 0 to 100, total mentions, mentions per platform, top cited pages, topics and prompts, estimated audience, a competitor comparison and sentiment.
Upsell: the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit. The checker page shows no price; Semrush's AI pricing page listed $99 a month per domain, billed annually, for 25 prompts tracked daily (checked 28 September 2026). Semrush's pages disagree on whether the toolkit has a free trial.
In the same 28 September scan, five of the seven engines named Semrush when asked for a free AI visibility checker.
Strength: the longest output list of the eight: a score, cited pages, prompts, sentiment and a competitor comparison from one domain.
Limit: no Claude or Perplexity, and the questions come from Semrush's database, not ones you write.
Pick it if: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode matter most and you want the fullest free report on them.

6. HubSpot AI Search Grader (best for how models describe your brand)
HubSpot's grader is a one-time check of how the engines represent a company. It scores five dimensions: sentiment (40 points), presence quality (20), brand recognition (20), share of voice (10) and market competition (10). HubSpot says it is based on model knowledge, not citation tracking.
Asks for: company name, location, products or services and industry. No domain field is listed, and the page says no account is required. Engines: ChatGPT (GPT-5.4 mini), Perplexity and Gemini. It does not cover Claude. Limits: no daily limit stated; a run takes "under two minutes". Returns: a score out of 100, five sub-scores and a written interpretation, with no citations or mention counts.
Upsell: HubSpot AEO at $50 a month, or included in Marketing Hub Pro and Enterprise (checked 28 September 2026).
Strength: the weighting is published, and the location field suits a business that sells in one city or country.
Limit: it measures what the models already believe, not which pages they cite today.
Pick it if: you want to know whether the models describe your brand accurately and favourably.
HubSpot's free AI Search Grader
7. Mangools AI Search Grader (best for a rank per model)
Mangools' grader writes prompts from your niche and checks whether and where your brand appears in each model's answer, reporting visibility and your average rank in the top 20. You give it a brand name and a short description of what you sell.
Engines: without an account, three models: GPT-5 Nano, Mistral Small 3.2 and Llama 3.3 70B. A free Mangools account (email) adds DeepSeek V3, Claude Haiku 4.5 and Gemini 2.5 Flash Lite. Limits: searches are limited without an account; the number is not stated. Returns: an AI Search Score from 0 to 100, visibility percentage, average ranking and competitor performance per model.
Upsell: Mangools AI Search Watcher, with no price on the page (checked 28 September 2026).
Strength: it is the only checker here that includes open models (Mistral and Llama) and reports an average rank per model.
Limit: Claude and Gemini need the free account, and the page names specific models, such as GPT-5 Nano and Claude Haiku 4.5, without saying they match the consumer apps your buyers use.
Pick it if: you don't mind a free signup and want a per-model rank across seven models.
Mangools' free AI Search Grader
8. Trakkr AI Rank Tracker (best for a ChatGPT-only check with the full reply)
Trakkr's free tracker shows where your brand ranks when a buyer asks ChatGPT for a recommendation. It asks for a domain; an email is optional.
Engines: ChatGPT only, through gpt-4o-mini. It does not cover Gemini or Claude. Limits: single checks, no stated daily cap. Returns: your rank position plus the model's full reply as proof.
Upsell: Trakkr Growth at $100 a month for 1 brand, 50 prompts and 8 models checked daily, or Scale at $500; both come with a 14-day free trial that needs a card (checked 28 September 2026).
Strength: you read exactly what the model said, not only a score.
Limit: one engine, through gpt-4o-mini, so it says nothing about Gemini, Claude or Google's AI answers.
Pick it if: ChatGPT is the engine you care about and you want the answer text as evidence.
Which free checkers skip Claude or Gemini?
Five of the eight skip Claude entirely: Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Semrush, HubSpot and Trakkr. Mangools adds Claude Haiku 4.5 only after you create a free account. That leaves Geoptie and SEOcrawl as the two that check Claude from a domain with no account.
Gemini is covered by seven of the eight in some form. Trakkr skips it, and Mangools, like Claude, puts it behind the free account.
Perplexity is missing from Semrush, Mangools and Trakkr, and Copilot appears only on Ahrefs'. A checker can't tell you anything about an engine it skips.
What can't a free AI visibility check tell you?
A free check is one snapshot, on questions the tool picks, on one day. It can't tell you whether you are gaining or losing ground.
Scores don't travel between tools: HubSpot works from model knowledge, Semrush from its own prompt database, Geoptie from a live query. A 60 on one is not a 60 on another.
Most free checkers also choose the question for you. The buying questions that matter to your business, written the way customers ask them, are usually not the ones a generic tool picks. You can test a handful of your own by hand in ten minutes with our guide to checking whether ChatGPT recommends your business.
When is a free check not enough?
You have outgrown free checkers when you need the same questions checked on a schedule, on the engines your buyers use, and a record of what changed after you fixed something. Free checks are built for one-off runs; recurring tracking and history are what the paid upgrades sell.
That is the job of a paid tracker. Cituna, which High Street uses in its own client work, checks your buyer questions every day on seven engines: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Grok, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. When it finds a gap, it writes the fix and can publish the article. Google Search Console and MCP are included. Plans are $39, $119 or $399 a month, with a 3-day trial that needs a card.
It has limits worth knowing. It does not track Microsoft Copilot, so if your buyers work in Microsoft 365, Ahrefs' free checker is the only one of these that shows you Copilot at all. The trial is three days and needs a card, and the plans are fixed tiers. Cituna's pricing page
The other route is to have it done for you: we run clients' buyer questions on the same seven engines, fix what keeps them out and measure it every week. Ask for a free visibility check.
For how Cituna and seven other paid tools fared on the tests we could run ourselves, see we tested 8 AI visibility tools. If budget is the main question, our budget-first guide for small businesses starts with the free options and moves up in price.
Which free tools did we leave off, and why?
We read 29 free or trial tools on 28 September 2026. These did not make the eight, for the reason given:
- Need an email for the report: Profound's free AEO report, LLM Pulse's brand mention checker (one report per email, and submitting subscribes you to its newsletter), Omnia's checker, Am I On AI's preview and Surfer's AI visibility audit.
- Need an account: AthenaHQ's free Essential plan (300 credits a month), Cairrot's first free report, Honeyb's full report, Writesonic, Rankscale, Knowatoa, Peec AI and search-visibility.ai.
- Check site readiness, not mentions: Arobis, Am I Visible on AI, Semrush's free SEO checker and Otterly's AI Brand Authority Check, which tests whether models recognise your brand as an entity.
- Estimates, not answers: Rank Prompt's checker has an OpenAI model predict who assistants would name.
- Other: Similarweb's leaderboard takes no domain input; LightSite's page does not say what it asks for; Ahrefs' AI Overviews Tracker covers one engine.
Questions people ask
Is there a free AI visibility checker that covers Claude?
Yes. Geoptie's AI Rank Tracker and SEOcrawl's AI Visibility Checker cover Claude with only a domain and no account. Mangools covers Claude Haiku 4.5 after you create a free account. Ahrefs, SE Ranking, Semrush, HubSpot and Trakkr do not cover Claude.
Which free checker covers the most engines?
Ahrefs' free AI Visibility Checker lists six: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode. It does not cover Claude, and the free view shows the top 5 rows per section.
Do I need to sign up to use these checkers?
Not for the basic run on any of the eight, as of 28 September 2026. Mangools needs a free account for Claude, Gemini and DeepSeek, and Trakkr asks for an optional email.
Why do free checkers give different scores for the same brand?
They ask different questions, use different engines or models and build their scores differently. HubSpot weights sentiment at 40 of 100 points, while Semrush draws on its own prompt database. Compare what each checker reports, not the score.
How often can I run a free AI visibility check?
SE Ranking allows five checks a day and Semrush three. Geoptie offers on-demand checks, SEOcrawl says there is no usage gate, and Mangools limits searches without an account but does not say how many.
Is a free check enough to track AI visibility?
For a first look, yes. To see whether a fix worked you need the same questions checked on a schedule, which free checkers do not do. Paid trackers such as Cituna check seven engines daily from $39 a month, with a 3-day trial that needs a card.
